THE MAGNACOSTER - water magnetising unit
THE CASE
I burst out laughing when I came across this product.
Sometimes it seems there are no limits to the imagination of the inventors of bizarre products, and also the gullibility of those who would pay good money for such stuff. This one takes the cake, or rather the glass of water.
The purveyor of this item claims:
This invites four questions. Can water be magnetised? Will the magnetism remain after the water is taken of the unit? Will this unit magnetise water? Does magnetised water have health benefits?
Can water be magnetised?
According to the laws of physics only a very few substances can become permanent magnets and these are metals such as iron. However many other substances will become weak, temporary magnets while they are in the field of another magnet. The field measurable in water is only about 1/100,000th of the external magnet - not much.
Will the magnetism remain after the water is taken of the unit?
No, as soon as water is removed from the magnet field all the magnetism disappears, there is no residual magnetic field.
Will this unit magnetise water?
Yes this unit will probably magnetise water, but the effect will be lost as soon as it is removed from the external field. You wouldn't have time to drink it. It's a bit like opening the refrigerator door to make sure the light is off.
Does magnetised water have health benefits?
There is absolutely NO evidence for any beneficial effects of the consumption of magnetised water. This is not surprising as magnetised water does not exist in a form that can be drunk.
Other Magnetic Contraptions

MY VERDICT
Don't waste your money.
All of these products make outlandish claims without a shred of evidence. Because these devices make specific medical claims such as "prevention of kidney and gall-bladder stones", a reasonable person would think that they should come under the watch of authorities responsible for the regulation of medical devices. In Australia this would be the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). However the Australian advertisements are very cleverly and carefully worded so as not to attract the attention of the TGA.
In the US the FDA, and some state authorities have successfully prosecuted companies for claiming disease amelioration and cure buy the use of various magnetic devices.

Magnetized water is generally consumed to provide an overall feeling of good health and well being. As such, it is often consumed as just one of the many contributors towards a holistic approach to good health. Magnetized water has many favorable effects on ones health. Benefits often achieved are in areas such as, the digestive complaints, cholesterol, diabetes, improved circulation, kidney stones, colds, coughs & many others.Who says?

Other Magnetic Contraptions
"This magnetic cup or magnetic mug has a 10 oz capacity. Magnetic penetration will re-vitalize cold or hot liquids in 3-5 minutes. Magnetically treated water is commonly used to aid digestion, for better absorption of nutrients, and to prevent kidney and gallbladder stones. This magnetic cup also improves taste."

SERENITY Single Line magnetic water conditioner
"Drinking/Cooking water - install under the sink and enjoy the benefits of living, energized water. Aids digestion, assimilation of nutrients, elimination of toxins, prevention of kidney and gall bladder stones. Shower heads - keeps shower heads clean, softer skin. Dishwasher/Washing machine - sparkling dishes, whiter laundry, less detergent. Use also for toilets, aquariums, hot tubs. Note: Use only on copper or PVC pipes."
"the liquid's surface tension" is lowered, which makes the beverage Absorption mach easier through the Body's Membranes. This is the condition the Water originally has when naturally stored in the Earth. These are easily quantifiable claims, but not surprisingly the vendor does not substantiate them.

You've forgotten our own Dick Wick. Not Dick Witt .... Dick Wick.

What about if you drank water while standing inside a huge magnet? Then the water would still be magnetic as you drank it.
To Francis Xavier Holden,
Thanks for the comment.
I hadn't forgotten Dick Wicks, there are just so many magnetic therapy products that I had to limit the blog to magnetic water. Since I wrote I have discovered some more fascinating products.
Human gullibility is quite depressing. I am worried that by writing about them I may be simply publicising them.
To peanutwolf,
What a great idea! But you wouldn't need to drink the water. If you stood inside a magnet, all your body fluids would me magnetised. I think you should market this.
Apparently the induced north pole should be down, if you are thinking of trying it - just take care with your dental fillings, and metal hip replacement.
I think it mainly aligns water molecules. I had tried a number of devices for my mother for bone joints and it never worked. The only one that worked is available with magnetic east or somewhat similar name manufactured by Russians. The uric acid of my mother came down
results of studies and evidences must go first, after you say something about it..
I appreciate you for all the valuable information that you are providing us through your blog.
