THE CASE
The anti-smoking group QUIT Victoria is annoyed because the tobacco company Philip Morris is going to test market is innovative product Heatbar in Melbourne.
This device purportedly allows the user the full enjoyment of a cigarette without actually lighting it. I suppose there are benefits for passive smokers, and allowing the users of Heatbar to circumvent anti-smoking laws. But I don't think Quit needs to worry about it catching on, it is bigger than some of the newer mobile phones.
The lifetime anti-smoking guru Professor Simon Chapman was quoted in June 2007 as saying:
"People aren't going to want to carry an apparatus around with them – it is like hanging a sign round their neck saying ‘I'm an addict.' This is just today's publicity from Phillip Morris".Some publicity blurb described the device as a "new movement in smoking, where art meets technology". They wish.
This device, pictured above, is frankly daggy. It does not even fulfill all the requirements of a cigarette replacement, no-one is going to get oral satisfaction by dangling a bloody great machine from their lips.
MY VERDICTHeatbar is not cool - compare it with an iPod. In its present form the kids are not going to use it, even if it does come in "four designer colours"..... Hey there's an idea! Philip Morris should get together with Nokia and Apple, then combine it in to a mobile phone and iPod.

Hi, you are talking about Phillip Morris. It is famous all over the world as a tobacco company. Detailed information about Phillip Morris you may find on the web site of the company. But there is one more rather important aspect – customers’ reviews. www.pissedconsumer.com is the right place to look for truthful reports.
Sharlotte, thanks for your link to the "Pissed Consumer" site.
Unfortunately the blogs in there seem to deal mainly with faulty packaging.
I would have thought that this is the least of the worries that a dedicated smoker has.
"I'm killing myself but at least the packaging is not defective!"
